Top ten social media tips for purpose-driven businesses

Amy Arora

Your purpose-driven business is ready to go! This is so exciting. But, before you set up a Facebook page, Twitter feed, or Instagram account, make sure you have a careful social media strategy in mind.

Here at Naturally Social, we like to consider ourselves the experts in this field, so here are our top ten social media tips for purpose-driven businesses. You’re welcome!

1) Plan, plan, plan

Much like the adage that everyone is an expert on education because they’ve been to school, we often make the mistake that social media strategy is easy. If you’ve used Facebook before, it’s as simple as just starting up a page and watching it grow. If only it were that easy…

As social media is one of the key ways to reach your audience, this should be as much a part of your business plan as planning products and purpose. This is doubly important for purpose-driven businesses where your content will have a message too.

2) Know your audience

Speaking of reaching your audience, make sure you know who your audience is, and plan your social media accordingly. Have a think about the kind of content your target audience might like to consume.

There is no need to leave this to chance. Do your research: ask your local community to complete surveys, talk to people in your network, and look at similar businesses online. If you tailor your social media to your dream customer, they are far more likely to come your way.

3) Make sure your content leads somewhere

For a purpose-driven business, this is key. Potential customers and clients are not coming to your social media for pretty pictures. They’re not coming to be sold a lifestyle. They’re coming because they believe that your business can help make things better.

In return, you owe them thoughtful, interesting content which leads somewhere. Don’t post for the sake of it. Post because it matters.

4) Be honest about where you’re at

You may well be using social media for your business already. If this is the case, take a long look at what you’re doing. How is it working for you? And what improvements could be made?

Too many businesses get stuck with a social media presence that isn’t truly representative of who they are. It’s never too late to change things up and make things better.

5) Use the right platform

You need to know your audience. That’s a given. But you also need to know where to find them. If your target market is teenagers, you won’t find them on Facebook. Think carefully about which platform will work for you and your business.

Accept the fact that you don’t need to have a presence across all platforms. Tik-Tok is not for the faint of heart! Look at what each platform can offer and go from there.

We are now halfway through our top ten social media tips for purpose-driven businesses, moving on to number 6.

6) Look out for new trends

The great thing about social media is that it is always evolving, just as your purpose-driven business is. It is vitally important to keep an eye on the latest trends.

For example, if your purpose-driven business is all about raising awareness or sharing an idea, you might consider using Clubhouse, an audio-only app that is currently taking the world by storm. Have a read all about it here.

7) Make social media work for you

Social media is a tool for you; don’t become a slave to it. Instagram influencers will tell you that you need to post twice a day every day, keep those stories updated, and, while you’re at it, create a few reels. But that is a terrible idea if what you end up posting is meaningless filler.

Think about what you’re really using social media for. As a purpose-driven business, it is understandable to want to grow your following, but the number one strategy which is guaranteed response is authenticity.

8) Keep your eye on the prize

Some businesses get so consumed by social media that they forget what they are using it for: to bring people to their brand, to spread the word, to get people talking. This is all very well, but there is no point attracting people to a brand that has been neglected in favour of perfect Tweets.

Remember why you started this business. Remember your hopes and aspirations – and keep your eye on the prize.

9) Get training

We understand that your business is your baby – and you want to keep an eye on what’s going on when it comes to social media. Your personality may well be an integral part of your social media strategy. We applaud that!

But you might also want to consider getting some training, to make sure that your social media is the best it can be. Here at Naturally Social, we run a fantastic Social Media Academy where you can learn all the tools and tricks of the trade without giving up control. 10) Celebrate your wins!

Don’t let yourself become disheartened by social media strategy. It can be overwhelming at first but if you are smart enough to run your own business (which you are), then you are certainly smart enough to make social media work for you.

You’ve made it to the end of our top ten social media tips for purpose-driven businesses. When you do get your message out there, celebrate! Social media was designed for connection, after all. By connecting with a wider audience, you are sharing your purpose and by doing that, you are most certainly making the world a better place. Sounds like a good reason for a glass of champagne to us.
