Top Tips for Christmas Campaigns

Rachael Luckham

Last year Marks and Spencer’s reported that nearly half of its customers would be finished with their Christmas shopping by mid-November.  So, with just over 100 days to go until Christmas, we’ve pulled together our Top Tips for Christmas Campaigns!

1. Be Prepared

Being prepared is the first of our tips for Christmas Campaigns! Getting ready ahead of time is going to allow for an easier build-up to the festive period.

Firstly, think about finalising your campaign messaging. Here’s the formula we use when creating content:

  • Educate your audience: Provide valuable information that highlights what your service or product does.
  • Entertain your audience: Share behind-the-scenes content to help build relationships with those following your accounts.
  • Inspire your audience: Post content that encourages your audience to take action. If you have any testimonials, these would be a great way to inspire your audience.

Then get your visuals ready. It might seem simple but be sure not to scrimp on ensuring each visual is optimised for each platform.

Top tip: If Pinterest is part of your social media strategy, make sure that your preparation starts earlier. They don’t call it ‘Christmas in July’ for nothing, and the algorithm can take a while to start pushing your content.

2. Take advantage of available tools:

By having a good lead-up time to Christmas, we’d advise that you spend a little time looking into your hashtags!

Researching hashtags might not turn up anything new from last year, excluding the date change. But if you need a little assistance, here are just some of the top Christmas hashtags from 2021:

  • #Christmas
  • #Christmas2021
  • #ChristmasIsComing
  • #ChristmasShopping
  • #Xmas

The next thing we recommend doing is ensuring your Facebook Pixel is installed.
Simply put, Facebook pixels can help retarget your website visitors, increasing the likelihood of them purchasing from you. By setting them up before Christmas, you have time to understand the benefit and can track the increase in traffic over the upcoming months.

With a potential increase in customers coming to your social media accounts for inspiration, be sure to use the available in-app tools.
Make sure you’re keeping on top of your Stories content so that you can further the audience’s attention and keep your product at the forefront of their mind.
With most social media platforms turning more and more to short-form video, tools like Canva could provide helpful templates and stock imagery/video.

The final tool worth mentioning is those faithful scheduling tools! These fantastic tools will allow you to continue to plan ahead and have your content scheduled ahead of time – leaving you time to concentrate on other elements of our business during one of the busiest times of the year.

Top tip: If you’re a product-based business, make sure you’re using the product tagging features where available.

3. Get Creative:

The festive period is already exciting, but you could create extra excitement by planning advent-style content, for example, the 12 days of Christmas.

This series could include 12 of your best products, Christmas hacks, product how-tos, or anything that reflects your brand.

Another great way to spark engagement is through a giveaway. You could ask your audience to enter by submitting a photo of pets dressed in their best Christmas get-up or suggesting a name for a new product.

Another way to build excitement in the run-up to Christmas is to share fun, ‘behind the scenes’, content of your projects.
This is a fantastic way to engage and connect with your audience, showcasing the team behind the products/services that you offer.  It’s also a great way for your audience to develop an understanding and appreciation of the hard work involved.

Finally, consider offering some additional value to your audience. You could do this by looking ahead to a new year and sharing thoughts on future trends. Try to collect information about future trends so you can create content with your predictions for the upcoming year.

Top Tip: Be sure to check the terms of service if you’re thinking about running competitions. Long gone are the days when contests are run with requests to like and share!

4. Think past Christmas:

We get it, Christmas is the busiest time of the year for most businesses, charities, and individuals. And while you’re prepared for months leading up to Christmas, delivered your Christmas campaign and finally relaxed. Don’t let your social media accounts fade into the background, especially after all the effort you’ve put in leading up to this point.

Be sure to schedule Christmas and New Years’ messages. If you’re planning to be open over the Christmas Period, share your opening hours with your audience. If you’re closed, let them know when you’ll be back!
